Volunteers are the lifeblood of organized play programs. They have historically been the driving force behind them, and most could not function without them. Healthy, longstanding programs are created through publisher support of volunteers and organized play programs, shared resources, non-exploitative practices, and by fostering non-discriminatory spaces to play games in.
Volunteers are not employees or contractors, and should not be treated as such. Publisher support of volunteers may take the form of, e.g., providing adventures, paying for printing of pre-generated characters for game days, or comped convention tickets, but volunteers will not be paid wages, salary, or stipends for fulfilling the duties of the volunteer role they've taken on. If a task or role is one normally undertaken by paid employees or contractors, it probably shouldn't fall on a volunteer's shoulders. While volunteers are free to choose to take these on separately from their OPF-sponsored duties, they should never under any circumstances be pressured to or face retaliation for refusing them, even if they had previously agreed to take them on. Publishers who find themselves regularly relying on volunteers for these additional duties should consider the ethics of their approach.
Information about volunteers will be used only to enable coordination of the volunteer's participation in organized play events. It will never be shared outside of this coordination or with any other organization. At any time, a volunteer can cancel the volunteer agreement they registered with us. This will mean they will no longer be contacted for volunteer participation, and we will no longer retain this agreement or their personal information.
Paizo Organized Play entails multiple ongoing and completed living campaigns: Pathfinder Society (PFS) 2e and Starfinder Society (SFS) 1e are the current campaigns. Starfinder Society 2e will replace SFS 1e upon its release next year, but SFS 1e games will still be organized and run through Paizo Org Play alongside PFS 1e and the Pathfinder Adventure Card (PAC) game.
Volunteers are organized into ranks based on the amount and intensity of duties they've taken on. While the details vary by region, they are generally: Venture-Agents running regular game nights at a single location, Venture-Lieutenants coordinating multiple locations within easy travel distance, Venture-Captains covering adjacent VL- and VA-managed regions within harder travel distance, and Regional Venture-Coordinators covering very large regions who work directly with each other and Paizo's Organized Play Coordinator to manage the living campaign on a global scale. Some Venture-Officers fulfill the duties of their rank in other ways, such as by organizing Paizo Org Play games at conventions, or by serving on committees that provide a service to Paizo Org Play as a whole.
If you're interested in becoming a Venture-Officer in Paizo Org Play, go here to find out which Regional Venture-Coordinator covers your region. Contact them to tell them your location and what you're interested in doing!
Join the Warhorn Discord if you're interested in helping out with it! Discussions will be forthcoming soon.
Volunteering directly for OPF helps the organization fulfill its duties in a timely manner. Boardmembers are the most visible of this group, but smaller needs occasionally pop up that can be fulfilled without taking on as much responsibility.
Calls for these positions will go out on an as-needed basis.
