About OPF

The Organized Play Foundation (OPF) was created to sustain the community of gamers who gather and play tabletop roleplaying games in publicly run campaigns.

The OPF currently has two primary programs.

The first is to advocate for the volunteers who make organized play games possible. Volunteers are neither employees nor contractors, and should never be treated as such. This program began with our support of the Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society campaigns, run by Paizo Inc. Our volunteers provide the backbone that keeps campaigns running. The OPF is also pursuing extensions of this program to support volunteers in campaigns run by other publishers.

Our second primary program is to run and maintain Warhorn, an online service used to organize games in a variety of settings from a plethora of publishers. A group of volunteer developers addresses feature requests and provides ongoing maintenance for this service.

The OPF is a 501(c)(3) organization. Our fundraising makes these programs possible. Warhorn incurs significant operational costs, as does managing legal contracts that protect our volunteers’ interests. We have no paid staff, nor do any board members receive monetary compensation. All donations solely fund these operational costs.

In all our efforts, the OPF works to advocate for the fair treatment of our volunteers, and ensures that the gaming experiences we champion are fun, safe, and inclusive.

We uphold this distinction, helping our publishing partners avoid crossing the line into legally or ethically unsound territory while also protecting volunteers from obligations they were never meant to shoulder.

Central to our mandate is the sponsoring and operation of systems that are critical to global organized play programming. Warhorn is our primary tool for game management, while we also help our partners navigate the legal complexities of onboarding and maintaining volunteers. We negotiate and help manage the agreements that govern these relationships, so that all our partners have clarity in their mutual protections, expectations, and boundaries. This enables our stakeholders to focus on publishing and running great organized play games.

As the global leader in this space, we set the standard for how organized roleplaying game programs protect, empower, and bring joy to everyone.
